Cougar dreams came crashing to earth in a contest that proved costly for BYU. After running up a 19-0 lead, the roof fell on the Cougars. Nielsen, who had thrown over 100 passes without an interception going into the OSU game, was intercepted twice, and both were returned for Beaver touchdowns. A field goal late in the third quarter put the score at 19-17, before Gene Dales picked off the last of three interceptions for the TD that won the game. Moreover, Nielsen suffered a knee injury in the third quarter that would keep him out of action for the rest of the season. Gifford had 48-22-3 for 255 yards, plus three touchdowns in his final game with BYU. |
