Evening Game (6 p.m.) (Showers, 60°) (19,651)
It wasn't a good night for football; very wet and on the chilly side. It showed up in the offense of both teams, and the contest was essentially a defensive battle.
As was expected, the Cougars went to the air early. Quarterback Marc Wilson hit tight end Tod Thompson in the end zone in the first period as the Cougars took a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second period place-kicker Bob Kittle booted a 24-yard field goal, and that was it for BYU scoring.
Oregon State scored on a 46-yard bomb in the third period.
OSU was limited to 207 yards total offense, and 46 of that came on one play.
Wilson was 38-15-3 for 193 yards and one TD for the evening. Tailback Casey Wingard was the top rusher with 48 yards on nine carries.
Win leaves series record at 4-3, OSU. BYU now 1-0.
