Day Game (High Clouds, 43°) (29,326)
Only a football fan who has lived in the Beehive State knows the impact of this traditional game between the Utes and Cougars.
BYU, having won the title, was favored to win a seventh consecutive game against Utah. For awhile it appeared they would.
Soon after the kickoff, Jim McMahon ran the ball 56 yards up the middle on a sneak. But the Ute defense held, and the Cougars had to settle for a 20-yard field goal by Brent Johnson.
McMahon put six more on the board with a 37-yard pass to Lloyd Jones.
Things tightened up, however, in the second period. The Cougars' Brent Johnson kicked two fields goals (52 and 21 yards) to give BYU a 16-0 lead at the half.
Utah came storming back with Randy Gomez connecting on three TD passes, the last one with only 2:13 left in the game.
Utah shut off BYU's offense in the second half.
It was LaVell Edwards' first loss to Utah in the seven seasons he has been coaching at BYU.
BYU now 7-3.
