Playing before the largest crowd ever to watch an athletic event in Arizona, the two teams were involved in a nonconference game of geographical import. The Sun Devils were new members of the Pac-Ten, and BYU the leading contender in the WAC. A wide-open offensive show was expected. BYU got on the scoreboard first with a one-yard run by fullback Bill Ring. ASU countered in the second period with a nine-yard pass. Tailback Casey Wingard scored on a 29-yard scamper to give the Cougars a 14-6 lead at halftime. BYU's passing attack stalled as Marc Wilson was limited to 17 completions on 42 attempts (there were four interceptions). Meanwhile, the Sun Devils found it easy going through the air, connecting on TD passes in the third and fourth quarters. The final score was ASU 24, BYU 17, in the final meeting of the two teams on the football field. No future meetings are scheduled between the two teams. (BYU now 1-1).
