Down 16-6 going into the fourth quarter, the Cougars came up with a superb come-from-behind effort to score 21 points in the final period and squeeze out a very important 27-23 win.
Quarterback Marc Wilson got the nod over Jim McMahon as the starter, and came up with his best game of the season. Wilson rushed for 44 yards on the ground, and went 24-of-39 for 293 yards in the air.
New Mexico was most effective on the ground, rushing for 215 yards and two touchdowns.
Running backs Bill Ring and Scott Phillips had 105 yards rushing between them.
Place-kicker Brent Johnson had two field goals (41 and 39 yards) to account for nine points overall.
The win at Albuquerque proved to be a key game in the Cougars' scramble for the championship.
Wilson was voted the WAC offensive player of the week.
