1980 Season Stats

Nov. 22 - Afternoon game (42°, rain showers, wind 4 m.p.h.) at Rice Stadium, Salt Lake City (30,520).

The Cougars' on-the-field actions spoke louder than the pre-game hype, with BYU securing the WAC Championship and the Holiday Bowl berth.

Utah battled BYU well in the first half, stalling the Cougars who scored quickly only on their initial drive.

Utah's offense was denied scoring opportunities until the Cougar offensive machine could untrack.

Eric Lane scored the first of his three touchdowns in the game on the Cougar's opening drive, Jim McMahon ran for a TD and then scrambled long enough to spot Clay Brown in the end zone on another "great athletic maneuver," according to LaVell Edwards.

Leading 21-0 at the half, BYU's offensive irons heated up for five more touchdowns, two more via the air to make McMahon the most prolific TD passer in the NCAA for one season.

Although McMahon played all four quarters, his 399 yards passing stopped his streak of four consecutive 400-yard passing games.

A bright spot for BYU late in the second half was the running of reserve tailback Scott Pettis who had a 50-yard run (the longest of the season for the Cougars) and scored the game's final touchdown.

Until Utah scored in the fourth period, BYU had held the Utes scoreless for seven straight quarters including last year's tallies.

BYU now 10-1.
