Sept. 13 - Afternoon game (78°, beautiful weather) in Provo (36,178). Televised regionally by ABC.
The Aztecs sought revenge for the 63-14 shellacking from BYU on national television in 1979.
Jim McMahon tossed four touchdown passes, including an 80-yard flick to tight end Clay Brown in the third quarter.
Brown also made the Cougars' first score on a 17-yard pass from McMahon.
The Cougar defense, which had been run over the previous week, stiffened to allow the Aztecs only one field goal in the first half and one touchdown late in the game.
The second score for BYU came early in the second quarter when McMahon layed a 17-yard screen pass to Scott Phillips.
Then, on its next possession, BYU found pay dirt again.
This time it was Bill Davis Catching a 15-yard McMahon pass for the score.
Even the defense chipped in to help the Cougars, who only ran two offensive plays in the third quarter.
Bill Schoeptim blocked an Aztec punt and Mike Lacey picked up the ball and ran 12 yards for the touchdown.
The Cougars used eight different receivers to "pass" up their opponents and gather 469 yards of total offense.
BYU now 1-1.
