The Cougar defenders grounded the WAC's leading runner, Gary Allen, to a minus one-yard rushing in a rare, mid-day game at Honolulu (game-time moved up to accommodate regional television).
For the second time in the season BYU had no touchdown passes.
However, Cougar wide receiver Neil Balholm scored when he fell on a fullback fumble in the endzone.
BYU kicker Kurt Gunther booted two field goals end one extra point to lead the team in a low-scoring affair.
Following this game BYU reappeared in both wire service polls after a three-week absence, 15th UPI and 18th AP. BYU now 9-2.
