1981 Season Stats

Sept. 26 - afternoon game (71°, clear) at Folsom Field (43,259)

This was among the highest pertormance levels of the season, but the scrap with the Buffs left over a half-dozen starting Cougars injured.

Jim McMahon, who threw for 198 yards in the first quarter, suffered a severe hyperextended knee in the early second half and would be sidelined for two games.

Center Bart Oates (ankle) and strong safety Mark Brady (back) had bad injuries. Fullback Waymon Hamilton, wide receiver Glen Kozlowski, and offensive linemen Vince Stroth and Wayne Faalafua were also injured.

BYU led 17-0 at halftime.

Steve Young subbed for McMahon and popped a couple of long runs to lead scoring drives.

BYU now 4-0 and ranked 10th in AP and 11th in UPI.
