Oct. 2 - night game (73°, some showers) in Cougar Stadium (41,129)
This was Steve Young's first starting assignment at quarterback, filling in for the sidelined Jim McMahon.
Young, the great-great-great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, called a key audible in the fourth quarter which sprang fullback Waymon Hamilton lose for a 42-yard run which tied the score, 26-26.
The game was tied three times, but the final deadlock was broken when Cougar linebacker Todd Shell intercepted a pass and ran 12 yards for his second touchdown of the season.
Miscues on long snaps and extra points were a problem for BYU.
The Cougars now 5-0 and ranked eighth in both polls, the highest ever in BYU history.
