1981 Season Stats

Oct. 17 - afternoon game (74°, clear) at Jack Murphy Stadium (41,727). Televised regionally by ABC Both teams were unbeaten in WAC play (2-0). The four BYU aerial strikes are vivid in this much balleyhooed offensive battle. Jim McMahon, his knee now in a brace, returned after a two-game absence. He was precise in passing to Gordon Hudson for a 67-yard gain, to Glen Kozlowski on a goal-line dive, to Dan plater on a quick look-in, and again to Hudson for a second effort in the end zone. BYU led 21-0 at halftime against former Cougar offensive coordinator Doug Scovil. Although McMahon set two more offensive records, BYU middle linebacker led a superb defensive blitz effort. Whittingham was named Sports illustrated defensive player of the week for his 18 unassisted tackles, four of which were for losses and four of which were sacks. BYU now 6-1, ranking 13th in AP and 15th in UPI.
