Only twice in over 20 years has BYU's defense held an opponent below 100 yards total offense. New Mexico netted 94 yards total offense after taking a 7-0 lead. Jim McMahon and Dan Plater both suffered mild concussions in the game. McMahon and Plater combined for the game's only second halt touchdown. Plater caught eight passes for 124 yards and won WAC player of the week honors. Defensively, Brandon Flint and Kyle Whittingham were standouts, each getting five unassisted tackles. The Cougars fumbled six times, losing all six, so it was a good thing the defense had an exceptional day. BYU now 7-2, but not listed in the rankings. |
