The two teams were tied three times before Air Force marched 99 yards in the final 1:30 to claim the victory.

The winning drive prompted Brad Rock of the Deseret News to write, "This may have been the fastest the U.S. government has moved in its history."

After the touchdown, the Air Force, behind 38-37, completed a pass for a two-point conversion to pull off the upset and spoil the inaugural of the expanded Cougar Stadium.

The crowd was the largest to witness a sporting event in the Intermountain area.

Statistically, the two teams were almost even, each with 26 first downs and Air Force with a narrow 489-459 edge in total offense.

Air Force coach Ken Hatfield called the game his most dramatic win.

BYU now 1-2 and 0-1 In the WAC.
