1982 Season Stats

Evening game (73°, windy, clear) (34,108) After two consecutive losses, BYU looked to the UTEP game to even its record. The Cougars scored on two Steve Young passes, and TD runs by four different running backs. A 47-yard Miner field goal in the second quarter prevented a shutout. Young completed 24 of 32 (including ten in a row) for 399 yards and added another 97 yards on the ground. The Cougar defense shut down the UTEP passing game. BYU, registering its 12th consecutive win against UTEP, rolled for 677 yards total offense. Gunther's string of 35 consecutive successful PATs came to an end during the contest. The 34,108 fans marked the second-largest UTEP home crowd in history. BYU now 2-2 and 1-1 in the WAC.
