BYU clinched at least a tie for the Western Athletic Conference crown and the Holiday Bowl berth in defeating the Miners.
UTEP had more possession time (41:03 to 18:57) and first downs (21 to 20) than BYU, but could not handle the quick strikes of the potent Cougar offense.
The longest BYU scoring drive was nine plays in four minutes.
Robbie Bosco threw four touchdowns in three quarters playing time, while tailback Kelly Smith rushed for 106 yards and one TD.
Defensively, linebacker Kurt Gouveia had 11 tackles along with intercepting a midair Miner pitch.
BYU set a new record with 20 consecutive WAC wins, while kicker Lee Johnson tied a school record for 27 consecutive PAT conversions in a season.
BYU now 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the WAC. BYU ranked number four in both AP and UPI polls.
