Heisman trophy results became available before this nationally-televised game on ESPN, but BYU quarterback Robbie Bosco didn't learn of his third-place outcome until after the game.
Bosco added three more NCAA records to his tally with a respectable performance against the blitzing Rainbow-Warriors. One of his two touchdown passes came as a result of fancy footwork on an 80-yard first quarter play by tailback Vai Sikahema.
Hawaii made it tough on BYU when it blocked the Cougars' extra point.
Sikahema, who was named ESPN's player of the game, repeatedly ignited BYU and scored a second 29-yard TD rushing in the third quarter.
This game was originally scheduled for the evening of Sept.28, but because of the ESPN contract it was moved to this December afternoon.
Because of the daytime heat, BYU platooned a lot, especially on the defensive line, which recovered two key fumbles.
Tight end Trevor Molini played sparingly and linebacker Ladd Akeo did not play at all.
The Cougars' Tom Tuipulotu scored the final touchdown after Hawaii mysteriously called timeout with seven seconds remaining.
BYU now 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the WAC, thus tying for the conference championship. BYU ranked ninth in AP and UPI.
