BYU's NCAA record 37-game touchdown pass streak ended, but the Cougar rushing game came alive with 90 of fullback Lakei Heimuli's 112 rushing yards coming in the second half.
Heimuli also scored two touchdowns, as did fellow backfield starter Vai Sikahema.
The Cougar defense snuffed out four Washington fourth-down attempts, two of which were goal line stands. The Huskies' only score came off a 48-yard field goal by Jeff Jaeger.
Washington lost three fumbles which didn't lead to any BYU scoring, but the Cougars did score TD's following each of two interceptions thrown by the Huskies.
Defensive tackle Jason Buck led the Cougar defenders with five tackles, a fumble caused, a fumble recovery and two quarterback hurries. Linebacker Kurt Gouveia had six unassisted tackles.
Two of kicker Gary Webster's three field goal attempts were in vain, one blocked and one awry.
BYU ranked 10th in UPI and 13th in AP. BYU now 2-1.
