Blitzes in at least 25 different forms enabled New Mexico to grab a rare 14-10 halftime lead.
Defensively for BYU, Jeff Sprowls had a pair of interceptions and Jason Buck had five quarterback hurries and a pair of sacks.
The Lobos benefited from an interception which they punched in from the three yard line to take a 7-0 lead and a second BYU interception on the UNM four yard line killed the Cougars' chance to equal a first quarter score.
BYU got on the scoreboard with a 46-yard fleldgoal from Gary Webster, but UNM countered with a 76-yard TD pass over the middle after a pair of Cougar defenders collided with a referee. Also in the second quarter, tight end Trevor Molini had one of several BYU TD's called back, but the Cougars eventually scored with a TD pass to Kelly Smith.
UNM shut down a pair of Cougar efforts when Molini was stopped following a 52-yard reception and when Bosco was intercepted for the third time on the three yard line just before the half.
Among the second half highlights was an 89-yard nonscoring pass from Bosco to Smith, who was tackled on the one yard line.
The Cougars regained their poise despite a endzone safety because of intentional grounding.
When the smoke cleared, Bosco had several personal bests, including a new WAC record for most yards passing.
BYU now 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the WAC and ranked seventh in both polls.
