The Lobos were surprisingly ahead, 3-0, through halftime after scoring on their first drive. BYU missed a field goal attempt just before the half, but scored on its first possession of the second half when Ty Detmer scored on a bootleg. The Lobos were still in the game until BYU's Brian Mitchell scored on a 97-yard interception return at the end of the third quarter. Mitchell's interception, which set a school record, came off a pass thrown by wide receiver Terance Mathis. Cougar Coach LaVell Edwards made a surprise visit to the UNM locker room to encourage the Lobos to play with the same intensity the rest of the season. BYU brought a pre-season ranking of 18 from UPI and 19 from Associated Press, but emerged 17th in UPI after the game. BYU is now 1-0.
