6 p.m. game (82 degrees, mild with slight wind) This wild game celebrated the 10-year anniversary of ESPN's live telecasts and was the PAC-1 0 debut of former Weber State Coach Mike Price at his alma mater.
The difference in the game was four field goals by Washington State's Jason Hanson, including a 58-yard stadium record and a 52-yarder. The long bomb was an effective weapon early in the game for WSU, which scored on 64 and 66-yard passes. Although he completed only 14 passes, quarterback Brad Gossen also had two other passes for 45 and 41 yards.
Hanson's final field goal left BYU behind, 46-28, with four minutes remaining. But BYU went 80 yards in a minute make it, 46-34, and then recovered the onside kick. A minute later (and with two minutes left) it was 46-41 but WSU recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.
Ty Detmer set NCAA high-water marks that held up for most of the season with 537 passing yards and four passing TDs. Cougars Matt Bellini, Andy Boyce and Chris Smith each tallied over 100 yards in pass receptions. BYU held returning PAC-10 rushing leader Steve Broussard to 36 yards but he scored three touchdowns.
BYU is now 1-1.
