Night game (clear and chilly) at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Penn. (ABC 96,304 record attendance)
Nationally ranked Penn State was coming off a big loss to USC the previous week and Joe Paterno had his team primed for a victory.
After the teams jockeyed for position early in the first quarter, the Nittany Lions struck first on a 38-yard field goal by Craig Fayak.
Early in the second quarter, Penn State quarterback Tony Sacca passed to Terry Smith for a 12-yard scoring strike.
BYU came right back and marched 71-yards in eight plays as Ty Detmer tossed a 17-yard touchdown to Bryce Doman. However, on the play Doman suffered a broken collarbone and is lost for the season.
The fortunes would turn in favor of Penn State early in the third quarter as BYU fumbled away the kickoff and six plays later Gerry Collins rambled five yards for the score.
Penn State added two more touchdowns on runs of three and 24 yards by Richie Anderson and a 33-yard field goal by Fayak in front of the largest crowd ever to watch the Cougars play (96,304). BYU is now 0-3.
