Ty Detmer tied an NCAA record for most 200 yard passing games, throwing for 329 yards and two touchdowns.

Detmer also ran for a touchdown.

BYU continued to improve its running attack with a 256-yard output. Freshman Mark Atuaia gained 94 of those yards on 11 carries and senior Peter Tuipulotu rumbled for 63 yards on 13 carries. He also had nine catches for 184 yards.

Earl Kauffman started the scoring late in the first quarter with a 28-yard field goal.

BYU then exploded for 21 second-quarter points.

After a Detmer run, Tyler Anderson and Brad Clark caught touchdown passes.

Tuipulotu and Atuaia finished the scoring with runs of one yard and five yards.

Late in the fourth quarter, Utah State added a Ron Lopez to Rod Moore touchdown pass of 35 yards and a 32-yard Doug Beach field goal. BYU is now 2-3 (1-0).
