BYU faces the heat in sunny El Paso with a new quarterback and a conference foe in the season opener.

John Walsh completes 17 of 28 pass attempts for 302 yards in his starting debut.

Walsh finds Eric Drage in the end zone twice for two quick touchdowns.

UTEP puts up 14 points of their own oft Kenny Brown rushes.

A two-yard run by Jamal Willis and a 24-yard pass to Byron Rex from Walsh give BYU the 14-point advantage at halftime.

Both teams score late in the third quarter as Kenny Brown re-appears for the Miners and workhorse Kalin Hall runs for a 25-yard touchdown.

David Lauder kicks a 34-yard field goal and UTEP quarterback Shawn Gray adds a final touchdown to cap off the offensive show.

Drage leads the Cougar receiving corps with 99 yards and Hall leads all rushers with 114 yards.

BYU is 1-0.
